Getting Started With LDOCE.

  • Open Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. Click on "Start" - "Programs" - "Longman" - "LDOCE" - "LDOCE".

  • Click on the icon with the question mark in the top right corner and choose "Guided Tour". Spend some time with the Guided Tour to learn how to use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. As you are working with the Guided Tour, try some of the advanced features you've leaned in the real Longman Dictionary window.

  • If you don't know how to complete some of the exercises, you can either ask your teacher for help or use the link bellow the exercise to see how it can be done with the help of the Longman Dictionary.

 

 

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Guided Tour

Exercise 1. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to look up the meanings of these words and expressions.

  • mascot






  • the Milky Way






  • to be head and shoulders about somebody






Exercise 2. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to find at least three examples of how the word "state-of-the-art" is used.

Hint. Use the dictionary Examples bank. You can find it on the right under the Phrase bank window.













Exercise 3. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to find out who is/was Jean Sibelius.




Exercise 4. Consult Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English and then draw two different pictures of an antenna.

Hint. Try to draw two different pictures even if you can find only one picture in the dictionary. Use the dictionary definition to find out what the other picture of an antenna must look like.

Exercise 5. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to find out if these sentences are correct or not. Put a tick (v) or cross (x).

Hint. In order to do this exercise you'll have to use the dictionary definitions, the Usage note, and the Examples bank.

  • I suggest to go out for a walk.
  • What did you suggest he do?
  • No possible reason suggests itself.
  • She suggested a picnic.
  • My Dad suggested that us play in the garden.
  • I am not suggesting that this will be easy.
  • Adam suggested playing tennis at the weekend.

Exercise 6. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to find out what impolite noun is the most frequently used in spoken speech. Is it used in the first, second or third thousand most frequently used words?

Hint. Use the Dictionary search to find the answers to this exercise.




Exercise 7. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to learn what language the word robot came from. What words of Ukrainian origin are there in English language?

Hint. To do this exercise you'll have to use the Word origin search.




Exercise 8. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to learn what synonyms to the word "beautiful" can be used to talk about a thing or a building.

Hint. Use the Longman Activator to look for synonyms and related words.








Exercise 9. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to find the words which have the following pronunciations:

Hint. Why not try using the Pronunciation search?










Exercise 10. Use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English to form the following tenses of the verb "to lie".

Hint. Make sure you take a look at the Verb forms. Mind you, there are two different verbs with different past simple and past participle forms.

  1. Present Simple: Peter never ____________ to anyone.

  2. Present Continuous: I think they ____________.

  3. Present Perfect Simple: She ____________ never ____________ to me.

  4. Past Perfect Simple: Anna confessed that she ____________.

  5. Past Simple: Now the town ____________ in ruins.

  6. Past Perfect Continuous: When he was found, he ____________ there only for a few minutes.

  7. Future Continuous: They ____________ in bed when you come.

  8. Future Perfect Continuous: This time tomorrow I ____________ for more than an hour.

Exercise 11. Do an exercise to find out what sounds the following instruments make (exercises => vocabulary => Choose the correct verb).
